Ciyanjano Reading Room Project
Hello everyone! I am so excited about this news and glad to finally share this project with you. This is a project that has been on my heart and in my mind since we first moved onsite at Ciyanjano. You may know that Kelly and I are both voracious readers - we LOVE books and we love to read. It is a value that we are passing on to our children and that we also incorporate into our ministry at Ciyanjano. So much of the information that has shaped me has come from books! I really cannot imagine being without them.
In Lusaka, most kids and adults do not have easy access (or ANY access) to books, magazines, or other reference and study materials. Many people have very limited access to the internet. The majority of the kids in our Bible Clubs and Bible Studies cannot read and have no access to books. I don't know about you, but to me that is just a terrible shame and one of the reasons I began our first Bible Club was because I wanted to expose children to good books and offer some reading help. And sure, we've been able to pass on Bibles and storybooks here and there but we can do more.
Our proposal has been accepted by ACTION Zambia to open a small resource library at Ciyanjano to serve 1) our Bible Club and Bible Study kids and teens, 2) our leaders and staff members, and 3) teachers and pastors in our immediate neighborhood of Kasupe. This will not be a lending library but a quiet place for study and preparation. I would also like to organize activities like regular story hours for children, reading tutoring, reading and math clubs, and more!
The first step of this big project has already been taken - SimpleBox is donating a 40-foot container which we can use for shipping supplies to Ciyanjano and then convert into our library building!!! Woo hoo hoo!!! Praise the Lord! And a huge THANKS to SimpleBox!
Converting the container is a convenient and affordable way to accomplish this project and will allow us to add another container space in the future if we wish. Now that we have a container we can begin the next steps in this process:
1. We need to raise the money to ship this container to Lusaka, Zambia! Based on all the quotes I have looked at, shipping will cost around $12,000. So far we have raised at least $1,000. Please pray and consider if you may be able to help with this project.
2. We need to fill this container with books and other supplies! There are many books and items that we need to make this reading room super useful and comfortable. If you are interested in helping with any books and supplies, please email me at thehuckabyfamily@gmail.com and I will send you our wish list for this project.
3. Start praying! Please help us prepare for this project by seeking the Lord's help with all this!
Thanks so much for reading! Please feel free to contact us with questions or if you would like to help at thehuckabyfamily@gmail.com.
