Encouraging WORD for everybody

We really uphold the Word of God, the Bible, as infinitely encouraging and valuable to us. We are amazed at the way, over the past 14 years, God has used his word to lead us and build us up in faith. We strive to read God's word each day because we love it and we love the fellowship we have with Jesus through the word. We also love to hear people teach about God's word.

One thing that I, Tricia, have never really gotten into though is podcasts. Before we came to Zambia, Kelly downloaded a lot of messages from different churches in the States. He listens to them in the car and sometimes on his headphones when he's working on the computer. I, on the other hand, never have. I live a very noisy life and generally don't have a time where I can actually focus on someone talking into my ears... especially with five kids around. Also, I confess, that if I'm not watching something and I'm only listening... I tend to fall asleep. Even if it is very interesting, I fall asleep.

Why am I bothering to blog about any of this? Well, this has been a hard year for us and while I have enjoyed some good teaching at church and Bible study this year, I was feeling like I needed a change. On Sunday afternoons we usually all lay down for a nap/rest. Instead of reading a book about Christian living or theology I asked Kelly to hook me up with some podcasts. I decided to check out Tim Keller from Redeemer.

WOW!

Talk about a nice change of pace! Don't get me wrong, we love our Zambian pastor and he is a good teacher. But, the Holy Spirit has really used these messages over the past few weeks to remind me of all the joy that I have in Jesus Christ. I have been so encouraged through these teachings and today I just felt that I had to share. God uses different things to encourage different people, but just in case you are needing an uplifting and challenging message today, you might try one of these from Timothy Keller:

Beholding the Love of God, April 2, 1995
A Covenant Relationship, Sept. 9 2007
The Jealousy of God, March 27, 2011
Basis of Prayer:  "Our Father", April 23, 1995
Come and See, Nov 15, 1998

These are all available here with dates from when they were posted to iTunes but with the same sermon titles.

Hopefully these messages are still available somehow online though they are old. If not, I would encourage you to listen to a newer message from him because he is a brilliant preacher. And if you happen to be one of my non-Christian friends reading this, then I want to say LISTEN!!! It's no accident that you are reading this and I pray that you will take the time to listen to some wonderful news that could open up a world of hope like you never imagined.

Staff Changes / New ACTION Zambia Director

Tim and Andrea Hilty have faithfully served ACTION Zambia for something like 9 years. Many of you know them and love them as we do. Some of you may not know that Tim has resigned as Director of ACTION Zambia and so we wanted to post this update. Tim and Andrea and their kids will be leaving at the beginning of December. Of course we are very sad!! Tim has led this mission with a lot of perseverance and energy and wisdom, and Andrea has supported him and helped with the work of the mission in many ways. They are great friends and one of the reasons we came to Zambia. If you know Tim and Andrea and this is news to you today, please take the time to contact them and let them know how much you appreciate their faithful service!

In October we said goodbye to Tyler Dingman, a young man who has been serving at Ciyanjano with us for the past 2 years. Again, we are sad to say goodbye but we are excited for Tyler who is engaged to be married to a wonderful young lady serving with another mission organization here in Lusaka. Tyler will be joining her in the work serving vulnerable children.

We'd also like to announce that Derek Dearth has been approved by our Zambian Board of Directors as the new field Director. Derek and his wife, Kristin, are awesome and we are confident they will do a great job leading our field with God's help. They have been serving with the CROSS HIV/AIDS program for the past 4 years. ACTION International will be sending out a representative to officially install Derek early this coming year. Please be in prayer for Derek and Kristin, and our whole team as we say goodbye to the Hilty family and get settled with Derek as our new Director. Thank you so much for you prayers!

October Update Pt 5 (Life As We Know It)

Friends and Family,
Pray for us.
We're tired out.
We're blessed.
We're exhausted.
We've seen God do the seemingly impossible.
We've cried and complained and swore.
This month has been full of blog updates. Not because we had some special things happening around Ciyanjano. Not because we've had extra time to write and load pictures. But I wanted you to see this life of ministry we've been blessed with. This month was a bit busier than some others. But not really. We've been running flat out since we hit KK International a year ago this week and this is a pretty normal month in the life of the Huckabys at Ciyanjano. Visitors, hellos and goodbyes, joyful moments and heartbreaking ones. Pray for us.

After 2.5 years with ACTION Zambia at Ciyanjano Tyler Dingman had his last day with us. He's moving on to marriage and bigger things but his willingness to step into the many gaps in my skill set and in my time limitations will be hugely missed. And he's been a wonderful friend to our family, our kids, the Ciyanjano staff and the Kasupe community.
Here's one good reason we need a trained nurse for Ciyanjano involved in children's ministry. I've been treating a number of kids from Ciyanjano Bible Club for various maladies (mostly nasty ringworm infections). I've got no real training except for basic first-aid and wikipedia and huge pack of medical stuff graciously left for me by the BBC team.

Nurse Joy leads the way out to a stack flats in the bush to check in on some kids.

Kyle Hansen has been with us this week from ACTION USA, meeting with pastors, visiting homes and ministries and learning all about AZ and hopefully preparing to send us some more workers for the field! We're having a meal at the home of Joshphat M'tonga who is a pastor in APC and on our national staff training other pastors in our Discipleship 2:7 program.

Even though we'd just eaten our weight in Indian food we politely sat down to a pile of nsima, kapenta (dried fish) and rape. Man we were FULL!
